In which years did the best singer in the finale win? According to this article's opinion, it's happened 5 times in 9 years. (It says Ruben and Clay were equal so it doesn't count that year).
It also says Kelly, Carrie and Scotty were the best singers in the finale in those seasons.
That leaves two others. If we can agree that Fantasia was one, then who was the other one? Jordin? What say you?

I'll have to agree. There is no consensus on what is considered 'best', and 'best' can change according to context. Since the show is about voting for your 'Idol', it's about popularity, not talent. And unless you're willing to posit that the producers are rigging the votes - the most popular contestant won.
De facto 'best singer'.

This is a good article, I think.
From this paragraph:
"No female singer has won since Jordin Sparks in 2007. In the past two seasons, male-female contests have gone to the guy. And in the past six seasons, the better singer has won just twice. "
Ok, the ast 6 seasons would be 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Kat vs. Taylor. "better" singer = Kat / loser?
Jordin vs. Blake. "better" singer = Jordin / winner?
David A vs. David C. "better" singer = ??? David A? / loser?
Adam vs. Kris. "better" singer = Adam / loser?
Crystal vs. Lee. "better" singer = Crystal / loser?
Lauren vs. Scotty. "better" singer = Scotty / winner?

I would agree with all of these but David Cook was also a very good singer. |

Have to agree with the guys here . . .
The author of the article, Ken Barnes, has subjectively decided what "best singer" means and has come up with a rating system that is also subjective in many ways. I don't agree with him on several points he made (i.e., that Clay and Ruben were equal), so I consider whatever he says as just one man's opinion. For him to come out and state his opinion as fact, is well, reminiscent of others I know. Who does he think he is anyway? Lance?  LOLOLOLOLOL!

According to WNTS ratings, the only singer from season 4 onwards to be both the "best" singer on finale night (according to the average ratings of their performances at the time) and be crowned champion the night after is
