American Idol has changed the contracts. Only the winner gets a decent record deal and not even the second place finisher is guaranteed a record deal. I sure hope the kids can become free agent sooner rather than later so they can have a chance to be signed elsewhere.

Here's the whole article (it's short) with a link at the bottom:

'American Idol' Changes Record Contract Policy: Runner-Up No Longer Guaranteed Major Bucks

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Coming in second on "American Idol" may still be a path to superstardom, but it no longer offers guaranteed paychecks worthy of the next pop idol or rock star.

Wednesday night's "Idol' runner-up, Jessica Sanchez, doesn't have a definite shot at producing an album and could be paid as little as $30,000 in advances for recording singles. This, according to the "Idol" contract she and other Season 11 contestants signed that was reviewed by The Associated Press.

The agreement is the first time in "Idol's" history that producers are not offering the show's runner-up an album deal that in previous years had a guaranteed advance of at least $175,000. The move comes amid declining album sales for the recording industry and a drop in viewership for the "Idol" show.

Representatives for "American Idol' refused to comment.

I dunno if I never gave you one or whether it got lost in the 22 hour black hole, but I'm gonna go with the black hole theory...

Interesting. Guess they're tired of losing money from signing contestants who don't have too much success.

Also, last year on IDF someone found out that on the day of the finale, 4 of the contestant URLs which were created at the beginning of the season were transferred over to the UMusic.com server. I tested that for this season's URLs and noticed that the only 2 who were transferred were Jessica and Phil. Kinda odd because the way Jimmy raved about Joshua and Skylar, you would think they'd get a deal from him but I guess not.
