so do you still play "the normal way" or did you learn "the Jimi way"?

that Kzoo amp could cost you $300 today LOL but would be awesome for studio work...

is that a floating bridge? or just adjustable? even though it's prolly the cheapest guitar you ever had, I'm sure you wish you still had it...

I'm also wondering what brand/model/year the amp is... those old tube amps can also fetch a pretty penny because for one thing, its old and historical, but more importantly to a performer/recorder is the "tone"...

I'd never heard of Jimmy Dawkins, but there are a few YT vids I listened to and yea, he's got the blues...

collecting the "right" guitars is not only a passion, but it can be quite lucrative... or you can go broke spending all your money on them LOL... I just barely play a few chords and for only a couple of years, but I can't let go of the few guitars I do have... and you read how Rock wishes he had all of his back...

we all have our passions... maybe it's time you and he expressed some together...

Thanks for that link, Roi. I'm going to check it out more closely. I, too, had some doubts about the dates given for the guitars and the amp after researching Jimmy Dawkins, but I probably wouldn't even bring it up except to satisfy my own curiosity. He loves that guitar and amp so much and would never part with it, so what's the difference if it is a few years older or newer than he thinks.

I know what you mean about how you feel about your guitars even though you say you can only play a little. I have always had an affinity for guitars (rock is my musical roots) but I don't have any musical ability as far as reading music or playing instruments. I took an acoustic guitar course once and had to drop out because I just could not get it. I wonder if it's too late to try again now that I have a lot more patience but maybe less finger dexterity? In any event, my creative/artistic appreciation side still keeps me fascinated by the guitar and its music, so at least I have that to expand upon and enjoy. Hearing from you and Rock and my friend, of course, is fueling that for me, so I'm enjoying this discussion very much!

We surely all do have our passions, and since you brought it up, I will say that my friend and I shared some mad crazy passion for each other starting back in high school for years and then we went our separate ways and lost touch. Upon reconnecting, it seems we still have unfinished business in that regard, and it's been interesting (to say the least) to do some time traveling and some reality checking. We are literally thousands of miles apart (and in other ways too for now), so thank God for email and forums to help bridge the gaps, eh? Anyway, it's a good experience for me and if I have set off a similar cathartic event for anyone else (maybe have sparked Rock's energy a little to take a trip down memory lane re: his guitars?), then it's all good!

Thanks to both of you for helping smooth the road on this journey! I sure do like learning about guitars and more about different genres of music and appreciate your input very much.

Thanks for the first installment, Rock. I really think you have the beginnings of a personal memoir of sorts. You should consider formalizing it at some point. I bet you have some good stories to go along with each and every guitar, no? Anyway, thanks for sharing this here with us! I look forward to what you have to show us next . . .

In response to Roi:

I play right handed to this day but my left is fast as light in solos which became my style through my growth over the years... Instead of sorting notes in scales I played sixteenthes with my right hand which made me known as one of the fastest players in the area in my time.
I learned every note that would work against a rhythym in a specific key and hit as many of them up and down the neck in no specific order with great speed rather than running scales. That became the style I was know for, much like Frank Zappa solos of old.

I am far more melodic now but on a "good day" I can still smoke em'.

I am currently mentoring a 26 year old kid that plays guitar both ways, His axe is left handed but he can pick up my "Utility Guitar" I keep around for these kids and play quite well either way, He has me listed as "The Wizard" on his phone...

If I can help him learn the ropes overall then my mission these days stands strong.

The Gibson Epiphone "Special" I keep on hand is only here for those kids for the most part though it has better pickups than MY main axe from a stage point of view.

He will joining me at the "Zoso" concert Thursday night via remote devices so I can grind in "The Big Picture" of the difference between living room and what it takes to make a mark in the industry.

(No dude rides the back of my Harley...or rides it for that matter.)

Ya' know...YOU really inspired ME with this thread at this point in my life Stella ... and I thank you!

When I started the "bucket page" of my history I was thinking I should post a record of it elsewhere beyond D.I. as well.

I had forgotton so much over the years about that over the years and I've been digging back to old photos and band records since...

Everyone that knows me here can't understand why I lay dormant at this point and believe me, I hear about it from them on a regular basis.

This has been the ONE THREAD I've had to come to grips with all the memories inside me beyond all my clowning the rest of the time in the forums here and the many beers I hide behind on a daily basis.

In my limited wisdom through the alcohol cloud I must thank you for what you started here. It is of help to me to do this.

When I started the "bucket page" of my history I was thinking I should post a record of it elsewhere beyond D.I. as well. Excellent!

I had forgotton so much over the years about that over the years and I've been digging back to old photos and band records since...Yep, I never played in a band but I have been going through some old pictures and memories, too.

Everyone that knows me here can't understand why I lay dormant at this point and believe me, I hear about it from them on a regular basis. That's what good friends are for! I am definitely in a dormant stage, too and I'm trying to shake myself out of it 'cause it's about time.

This has been the ONE THREAD I've had to come to grips with all the memories inside meoh boy, can I relate to that! beyond all my clowning the rest of the time in the forums herePlease don't stop that - you are often the main entertainment (especially this past AI season) and the many beers I hide behind on a daily basis.acknowledgement is a first step . . .

In my limited wisdom through the alcohol cloud I must thank you for what you started here. It is of help to me to do this.My intention was to help me (and it is helping) but if it can extend to helping you and/or others, my heart is warmed - thank you for that!

It's great that you are teaching the younger ones, too. Don't forget one thing: Mick Jagger (and many others I could name) were eligible to receive AARP membership for many years now. They've still got it in them and I bet you do, too (not talking about the beers now ).

#2: My big sister had a Gibson classical guitar and taught me the standard open faced chords over the next year...

I played the Wards Airline until my 12th Birthday at which point my Dad took me back to the same music store that told him left handers can't play guitar...

I REALLY WANTED a fancy looking solid body guitar but they talked him into buying the best Gibson hollow body in the store which cost more than the one I wanted...and it was used but looked brand new...

I had NO idea what I had was a 1948 Gibson (19 years old) at the time
for $235.00!!!!

I have a black and white photo of me playing this one however the photo is at my best friend's house as is one of my bass guitars for safe keeping.

I will post it subsequently as I got to get it and have him scan it.

At this point I took 6 weeks of guitar lessons, learned bar chords and basic notation but when my teacher "Mike Kinch" moved to Michigan I quit lessons and from that point on I am self taught...

I thought so Roi as I have reviewed your page where Leatha is posted I checked out the rest of what music you enjoy and that Gibson is PERFECT for blues, bluegrass, and such.

At 11 & 12 years old The Ventures were my heros soon to be Hendrix...

Lots more to come, I just fished out some stage photos of me with many of the guitars I'll be posting here, just a matter of getting them to Denny's to scan them.

Perhaps this weekend....

#3:

By my 13th Birthday I was starting to blossom as a guitarist so Dad took me to a different music store and we traded the Gibson in on a guitar that was more suited to my interests, My first real solid body axe, a light blue Fender Jaguar...

...In addition we traded the tiny Kalamazoo amp in for a Fender Twin Reverb with 2 12 inch speakers...

At this point I started forming bands and wrote my first song.

Over the next year I acquired microphones, a small PA system a "FUZZ BOX", a Cry Baby wah wah pedal, saw Woodstock and became a Jimi Hendrix fan.

It was interesting at that point to see someone play left handed and made the guys at the first music store look like idiots which I am guessing Dad knew all along.

For me, there was no turning back, I was playing right handed and wasn't gonna' start all over so to this day I play right handed.
